Btec National Diploma in Media (Film and TV)

TREATMENT (drama)

PROGRAMME TITLE: "Everyone needs to laugh"

DIRECTOR/
CAMERA OPERATOR:
Shannon Singleton

DURATION: maximum 5 minutes

FORMAT: video camera

AUDIO: diegetic.

OUTLINE OF AUDIENCE: anyone who wants to view it.

OUTLINE OF STORY: i will film each person from our class laughing or smiling. The only sound will be of them laughing sounding like "HA-HA" i will also speed up the pace of the video when i start to edit the video. i have chosen to create an experimental video like this because i want to create a feeling of disturbance as the laugh speeds up i will have images/video clips of things people would usually find disturbing or unnatural.

CHARACTERS: The students in my class/around college.

How these works might inspire my own work - chapter 5.

watching these experimental videos has inspired to make my own piece as they are all very interesting, each one video stands out in their own way and has their own points to the story, especially "dollface" i think this film is very individual, you dont really see videos made like this often, which has made me realise that i want to make a video that really stands out, that really makes a statement because i believe that being different and indivual is important. so this is why i am going along the lines of making a video similar to dollface, it may not be the same technical way, but the storyline of dollface will be very similar.

The use of technology, techniques and styles...

The girl chewing gum, by john smith was made in the 70’s,so technology used back then would not of been as great as the technology used today for example in koyaanisquatsi, by Godfrey Reggios which was made in the 80’s there is a 10 year gap which would mean the technology could have improved slightly, for example in koyaanisquatsi there are some shots in the video that are quite hard to get and in some points in the film there are time lapses where Reggios has sped up images in the film to create the sense of everything being in a rush, also images that are slowed down to show slow motion. Technology used in “doll face” is completely different to the technology used in koyaanisquatsi and the girl chewing gum; this is because doll face is an animation, used with CGI graphics which is a very modern type of graphic used to create special effects, made on the computer, 20/30 years ago this was not around so we can clearly tell the difference from a 1960’s/80’s film.

Discuss both past and current artists.

In the girl chewing gum by john smith made in the 70’s, we first of all perceive the video as the director directing the film as when watching the video we can hear him talking as if he is directing it which makes us believe he is, we then start to think as you watch and listen carefully that this is a pre recorded film being spoken over by, by john smith, it is also as if the sounds are diegetic because we can hear the sounds of cars, birds fluttering, people speaking and laughing as we see it happening, but as it is pre recorded it is therefore non diegetic, whereas in 1001 nights by Jananne Al-Ani made in the late 90’s, the film has already been directed and the sounds are actually diegetic, the short film is a group of women each telling a story which we then understand to be a nightmarish kind of hallucinating like dream. Also in koyaanisquatsi and the girl chewing gum they are in some way similar as they both have the use of non diegetic sounds, as the footage has already been recorded.

Another example of experimental media - college student example..

i thought this example of experimental media by students from the college was a brilliant idea, where the student recorded various shots of a hand or a fist making a sound which when put together then became a beat, also with the sound of a mouth. i thought it was a very clever and creative idea, the way it was slightly fast forwarded to go to the beat. it must have taken alot of time and energy to create this funky film, and the fact that it had to all be put in proportion, you could tell there was alot of hard work and effort put into the video. watching this has also inspired me for when i have to create my own piece.

The girl chewing gum...

this short film seems to me, a man , the director John Smith, who is trying to direct a film that was just a real life that has already been filmed, like he is tring to make it look like he is directing it as it happens when really the film has been made and he is describing what is happening. at the beinginig of the film i thought that it was quite good, the way that the man speaking had directed it, but as i w atched i realised something wasnt right when he started to direct the two pigeons flying passed the clock, then i thought to myself that you cant actually direct pigeons, they dont know they are acting! it then started to sound like he was just describing what every person is doing and everything that was hapening. i then started to get bored of the film, but realised it was very cleverly done, being edited and directed in a specific order and how he put it all together. this 9 minute long film was made in 1976.

The 2 C's Craft and Concept..

craft and context both determine art, for example, if i was to place a chair in the middle of a room, that would be based more on context rather than craft, because i did not make the chair, i only put it there. it would be context because it would be my own form of art, i would have had a specific reason for putting the chair in the middle of a room in the first place because it would have signified or meant something to me. if me placing the chair in the middle of the room was based on art, it would have meant i actually made the chair myself, placed it in a room and called it art.

1001 nights review

The video, 1001 nights is about 6 woman who are taking it turns to tell a story, the premise of this short film is about war and fear. The film was made in 1998 and is 6 minutes long.
The storyline of the film is intresting because all 6 of these woman are telling accounts of what happend to them and how they felt during some kind of war, it is almost as if they are speaking on behalf of someone else or as if they are reading form somewhere. they take it in turns to tell their part of the story, each with their eyes closed, until it the the next persons turn to speak. the woman are all in a row, all we can see are the head and shoulders and the black background. the sounds are digetic as there are no other sounds other then the woman speaking. when we watch the video we take into account their fear and how they felt, the noises they hear and the things they saw, listening to what they were saying made me imagine what was hapening, you could almost feel the fear for them, what we couldnt work out though was if it was a true story or account of someones or if it was a dream, this is what makes the film interesting to me.

koyaanisquatsi!

This film was made in 1983 and is directed by Godrefry Reggio, it is 1 hour and 23 minutes long. this film is made up with reali life images and videos which are quite hard to capture, it seems to be based in a city in America somewhere. the video starts with the camera filming over some caves, then there is an explosion and the camera starts to follow everything falling and it filming that precise part for a good 5 minutes. it then switches to city life, cars going up and down on a motorway, but this part of the video, the camera is spead up along with the music , whenever the film is spead up the music is aswel so it is in proportion. the film then goes on to film army tanks on a beach in rows and planes and battleships wih planes on it, it then goes to the scene of the whole city, children playing on the street then everything is fast forwarded again. koyaanisquatsi mean life out of balance, which this film clearly displays, it is quite random how everything is put together, but at the same time quite interesting, this is where craft and concept comes into the film. the director has made this film in a special way to put his ideas across, we may not understand his "art" and the way he put this film together and why he did so but it depends on the way you decide to look at the film, like if you think the film is just boring and you dont understand it, or if you watch the film properly, understand why the director has chosen those particular shots he did and also understand the meanin of the title, life out of balance. it is art in his own form. the sounds used where non digetic as there was music played throughout the film and we could not see where it was coming from, so we automatically assume it was being played over the film.

Brighton trip....photo 2....

I also chose to take this photo as i think it is very catching to the eye as it has the view in the background and the old pier, which is history, and also the part of the city in the background. It also represents Brighton as everyone who will look at this image will know where this picture has been taken. It looks like the sort of image you would find on a post card as its a typical Brighton view. what caught my attention though, when i was taking this picture I couldnt get over how blue the sea was looking and the weather was brilliant i thought that the timing was just right to take the picture, the sunlight wasnt in the way of the shot, so the image wasnt too bright, and the beach was quite clear at that moment in time, which is quite shocking as you would think that the beach would be pact especially on a day like that.

Our Brighton trip...photo 1...

I chose to take this picture as i thought it was a typical image of Brighton, when i look at this picture i automatically know that this is Brighton, not because I took the picture, but because the majority of people will know that this is brighton when they see this because it is a well known place. I took this picture because i think this is a really good shot of both the seaside and the city and looks very attractive. It would also look very nice as a post card.
