Evaluation for my exhibition

Evaluation for my exhibition

For my exhibition I first of all decided I would exhibit my video in the common room in college on lunch break which I thought would be a good idea a as at lunch time usually there is a big crowd of people which would have been great to show them, I would have set the seats out in rows for the audience to sit and watch, but I decided to go with exhibiting my piece in one of the media rooms on the 4th floor which is the media department t45. I chose this particular place to exhibit the video because I believe that the media student would understand more what I was trying to portray, rather than another student in the college studying another subject. I thought this as being a media student they are more likely to understand the idea of the video and the idea of the place I chose to exhibit it. A media student would more likely laugh along with the video, which is the aim really, whereas another student who does not understand the concept of the video is more likely to just laugh at it. I burnt my video onto a disk and projected it onto the interactive white board in t45, I had an audience of 7 people which all filled out a brief questionnaire I had prepared for them to do which will give me an idea of how they perceived the video and exactly what they thought of it, I read through some of the comments and was very pleased with what they thought of it.

Evaluation for my experimental video

Evaluation for my experimental video

Overall I think during this project I did quite well, I learned how to edit using the Macs and enjoyed working on them. I also found making the video quite fun, when I first heard we had to make an experimental video I had so many ideas and thought I could put them into one, but I realised it would be quite difficult to try and put them all together because it just wouldn’t have made sense.

Instead I came up with the idea of laughing, which then gave me the idea of using different peoples laughs and putting them together then editing them. The idea was to show how people laugh differently and also what can make a person laugh in the way that they do.
I then needed to think about whether it would be diegetic sound or non-diegetic sound, I chose to use diegetic sound, as I wanted the audience to see where the laughs were coming from and that they were not pre recorded.

The people I chose to use in my video where some of the pupils from my class, I did this because the particular people I chose each have a unique laugh which I thought would be perfect for the video, they are also people with amazing personality which the audience can see when they watch the video, they really know how to have a laugh and have fun.

In order to record my video I needed to fill out some paper work 1st, which included information about my shooting schedule, contact numbers of the actors/actresses that were in the video, information on the health and safety whilst filming the video, a story board and the treatment form which I also posted up on my blog.

After everything was filmed and edited I needed to exhibit my video to an audience, which I needed to choose a particular place to do so.
Just before we started filming our experimental video, we were taken on a trip up to London to an exhibition gallery called the “Tate modern” to look at different artists work, which included videos which were set in a specific place to create a meaning of the video, the idea was to make the audience feel and virtually see exactly what the artist was portraying to its audience. Each one did not have a specific audience it was aimed at which meant anyone could watch it but it also meant that not everyone would understand it.

We were taken here for a particular reason which was to give us ideas on how we could exhibit our own experimental videos which included the layout of how we would show the video to the chosen audience and why we chose this particular layout, it all needed a reason which the audience would understand why and then begin to understand what the video is about. So I will need to choose a specific place where I will exhibit my video so people who will view my video will understand what I am portraying and what the video is actually about, even though the video is simply about different peoples laughs some people may portray it as something different so this is why it is important that I need to show it to people who are interested and that is important I show it in the right atmosphere which will be positive.

Production and Pre production diary.

Production and pre production diary

24th November we start on our paperwork which needs to be done before we start to film as it includes the risk assessments, shooting schedules, storyboards, shotlist, and the treatment form which are all important and need to be filled out.

Friday November 28th 2008 I begin to film my experimental video project.
2.00 pm I collect my camera and gather my actors and actresses together to start filming. The people I am using in this experimental video are Ben Pitt, Martin Ladd, and John Perrine, keziah Quarcoo, Shanice Russell and Shaun Sole.

At first I thought it would be easy to get them together but they decided to be difficult and mess around right when I wanted to start filming which annoyed me, so I had to get each individual person and start filming them on their own as they laughed which they then began to take me seriously and do what I asked of them.
Monday December 1st I begin to edit my video using the Mac computers, at first I find this difficult and ask kez to help me which she does then I begin to get the hang of using the Macs and start to edit it myself every time we have Chris’s lessons.

Installation plan

Time: 11.30am
Date: 17-12-08
Location: t45 - media department.

i have chosen to exhibit my video in this particular place as i think the media students that will view it will understand more what i am trying to portray in my video, i also think the energy from the students will be great as the pupils are fun and have great personalities, which is really what my video is all about.
i will exhibit my video on the last day of term as i want the students to have laugh and be positive, i will show it between 11am and 11.30.

The use of exhibition space to create meaning, How does the exhibition space change the meaning of the work.

Dominique Gonzalez's "th.2058" use of exhibition space is exhibited to the viewers starting with thick strips of plastic that hide the artwork that is hidden behind so it makes the viewers wonder what is beyond so they will want to go and have a look. The plastic strips are orange and green but are near enough see through so you can just about see what is behind which makes it even more intriguing. Behind this there are rows of blue and yellow bunkbeds all spread out, each one with a book on top. As you walk into the hall, the first thing you see is an enlarged spider which towers over everyone, also on the other side of the hall there is an enlarged skeleton of some kind of animal, it looked as though it was meant to be a dinosaur. In the centre of the hall at the back there was also a big screen twhich was playing a film, looked to be set in the future, each bunkbed had a set of earphones that were connected to the screen so when you listened you could here the story behind the art. The story Dominque Gonzalez was trying to convey was that in 50 years time there would be never ending rain and the people of london would be taking shelter in this hall, and as it rained more it made spiders and skeleton bones grow bigger. This piece also creates the feeling of being uncomfortable and confused, the beds are empty so we wonder why, theres a skeleton and a large spider towering over so this gives the feeling of being taken over, and also the fact that the hall is so big.
Susan Hiller's psi girls is also very effective as it is set in a little darkend room with the lights switched off with a projector in the middle of the room projecting short clips from films that are potraying young girls and woman exercising paranormal powers. As you walk into the room there are no lights, just the light reflected from the projector which is similar to a rainbow colour, there is also a bench were you can sit and watch the screen, viewing this gives the audience the sense of excitement of what is going on because each girl on each screen is exercising their physic powers which is intriguing to watch because it is abnormal yet quite extraordinary to be gifted in that way. Watching this gives the feeling that you are watching it in a cinema which everyone likes to do so buy watching this video you are taking in the concept of the story yet also enjoying the relaxation.

CAMERA OPERATOR:
Shannon Singleton

DURATION: maximum 5 minutes

FORMAT: video camera

AUDIO: diegetic.

OUTLINE OF AUDIENCE: anyone who wants to view it.

OUTLINE OF STORY: i will film each person from our class laughing or smiling. The only sound will be of them laughing sounding like "HA-HA" i will also speed up the pace of the video when i start to edit the video. i have chosen to create an experimental video like this because i want to create a feeling of disturbance as the laugh speeds up i will have images/video clips of things people would usually find disturbing or unnatural.

CHARACTERS: The students in my class/around college.

How these works might inspire my own work - chapter 5.

watching these experimental videos has inspired to make my own piece as they are all very interesting, each one video stands out in their own way and has their own points to the story, especially "dollface" i think this film is very individual, you dont really see videos made like this often, which has made me realise that i want to make a video that really stands out, that really makes a statement because i believe that being different and indivual is important. so this is why i am going along the lines of making a video similar to dollface, it may not be the same technical way, but the storyline of dollface will be very similar.

The use of technology, techniques and styles...

The girl chewing gum, by john smith was made in the 70’s,so technology used back then would not of been as great as the technology used today for example in koyaanisquatsi, by Godfrey Reggios which was made in the 80’s there is a 10 year gap which would mean the technology could have improved slightly, for example in koyaanisquatsi there are some shots in the video that are quite hard to get and in some points in the film there are time lapses where Reggios has sped up images in the film to create the sense of everything being in a rush, also images that are slowed down to show slow motion. Technology used in “doll face” is completely different to the technology used in koyaanisquatsi and the girl chewing gum; this is because doll face is an animation, used with CGI graphics which is a very modern type of graphic used to create special effects, made on the computer, 20/30 years ago this was not around so we can clearly tell the difference from a 1960’s/80’s film.

Discuss both past and current artists.

In the girl chewing gum by john smith made in the 70’s, we first of all perceive the video as the director directing the film as when watching the video we can hear him talking as if he is directing it which makes us believe he is, we then start to think as you watch and listen carefully that this is a pre recorded film being spoken over by, by john smith, it is also as if the sounds are diegetic because we can hear the sounds of cars, birds fluttering, people speaking and laughing as we see it happening, but as it is pre recorded it is therefore non diegetic, whereas in 1001 nights by Jananne Al-Ani made in the late 90’s, the film has already been directed and the sounds are actually diegetic, the short film is a group of women each telling a story which we then understand to be a nightmarish kind of hallucinating like dream. Also in koyaanisquatsi and the girl chewing gum they are in some way similar as they both have the use of non diegetic sounds, as the footage has already been recorded.

Another example of experimental media - college student example..

i thought this example of experimental media by students from the college was a brilliant idea, where the student recorded various shots of a hand or a fist making a sound which when put together then became a beat, also with the sound of a mouth. i thought it was a very clever and creative idea, the way it was slightly fast forwarded to go to the beat. it must have taken alot of time and energy to create this funky film, and the fact that it had to all be put in proportion, you could tell there was alot of hard work and effort put into the video. watching this has also inspired me for when i have to create my own piece.

The girl chewing gum...

this short film seems to me, a man , the director John Smith, who is trying to direct a film that was just a real life that has already been filmed, like he is tring to make it look like he is directing it as it happens when really the film has been made and he is describing what is happening. at the beinginig of the film i thought that it was quite good, the way that the man speaking had directed it, but as i w atched i realised something wasnt right when he started to direct the two pigeons flying passed the clock, then i thought to myself that you cant actually direct pigeons, they dont know they are acting! it then started to sound like he was just describing what every person is doing and everything that was hapening. i then started to get bored of the film, but realised it was very cleverly done, being edited and directed in a specific order and how he put it all together. this 9 minute long film was made in 1976.

The 2 C's Craft and Concept..

craft and context both determine art, for example, if i was to place a chair in the middle of a room, that would be based more on context rather than craft, because i did not make the chair, i only put it there. it would be context because it would be my own form of art, i would have had a specific reason for putting the chair in the middle of a room in the first place because it would have signified or meant something to me. if me placing the chair in the middle of the room was based on art, it would have meant i actually made the chair myself, placed it in a room and called it art.

1001 nights review

The video, 1001 nights is about 6 woman who are taking it turns to tell a story, the premise of this short film is about war and fear. The film was made in 1998 and is 6 minutes long.
The storyline of the film is intresting because all 6 of these woman are telling accounts of what happend to them and how they felt during some kind of war, it is almost as if they are speaking on behalf of someone else or as if they are reading form somewhere. they take it in turns to tell their part of the story, each with their eyes closed, until it the the next persons turn to speak. the woman are all in a row, all we can see are the head and shoulders and the black background. the sounds are digetic as there are no other sounds other then the woman speaking. when we watch the video we take into account their fear and how they felt, the noises they hear and the things they saw, listening to what they were saying made me imagine what was hapening, you could almost feel the fear for them, what we couldnt work out though was if it was a true story or account of someones or if it was a dream, this is what makes the film interesting to me.

koyaanisquatsi!

This film was made in 1983 and is directed by Godrefry Reggio, it is 1 hour and 23 minutes long. this film is made up with reali life images and videos which are quite hard to capture, it seems to be based in a city in America somewhere. the video starts with the camera filming over some caves, then there is an explosion and the camera starts to follow everything falling and it filming that precise part for a good 5 minutes. it then switches to city life, cars going up and down on a motorway, but this part of the video, the camera is spead up along with the music , whenever the film is spead up the music is aswel so it is in proportion. the film then goes on to film army tanks on a beach in rows and planes and battleships wih planes on it, it then goes to the scene of the whole city, children playing on the street then everything is fast forwarded again. koyaanisquatsi mean life out of balance, which this film clearly displays, it is quite random how everything is put together, but at the same time quite interesting, this is where craft and concept comes into the film. the director has made this film in a special way to put his ideas across, we may not understand his "art" and the way he put this film together and why he did so but it depends on the way you decide to look at the film, like if you think the film is just boring and you dont understand it, or if you watch the film properly, understand why the director has chosen those particular shots he did and also understand the meanin of the title, life out of balance. it is art in his own form. the sounds used where non digetic as there was music played throughout the film and we could not see where it was coming from, so we automatically assume it was being played over the film.

Brighton trip....photo 2....

I also chose to take this photo as i think it is very catching to the eye as it has the view in the background and the old pier, which is history, and also the part of the city in the background. It also represents Brighton as everyone who will look at this image will know where this picture has been taken. It looks like the sort of image you would find on a post card as its a typical Brighton view. what caught my attention though, when i was taking this picture I couldnt get over how blue the sea was looking and the weather was brilliant i thought that the timing was just right to take the picture, the sunlight wasnt in the way of the shot, so the image wasnt too bright, and the beach was quite clear at that moment in time, which is quite shocking as you would think that the beach would be pact especially on a day like that.

Our Brighton trip...photo 1...

I chose to take this picture as i thought it was a typical image of Brighton, when i look at this picture i automatically know that this is Brighton, not because I took the picture, but because the majority of people will know that this is brighton when they see this because it is a well known place. I took this picture because i think this is a really good shot of both the seaside and the city and looks very attractive. It would also look very nice as a post card.

experimental video

Experimental video, video art, electronic art, alternative TV, community video, guerrilla television, computer art: these are a few of the labels that have been applied to a body of work that began to emerge in the United States in the l960s. Arguably, the most important of these labels is "experimental." The dominant goal of this video movement over the past 30 years has been change, achieved through the strategy of experimentation. The consistent target for this change has been television--commercially supported, network broadcast, mainstream television--whose success with mass audiences was the result of the repetition of proven formulas rather than aesthetic, ideological or industrial innovation or experimentation. It is perhaps commercial television's ability to interpret the uncertain world within the context of familiar conventions that makes it an essential part of everyday life in America. And it is this body of familiar interpretations that became the challenge of experimental video artists.
